While I don’t have as many ratings as some of the monsters on RYM, I feel I should at least explain myself.
I've got a dumb philosophy for music listening/rating, so buckle in.
The way I see it, relistening to an album repeatedly before rating it means less time for finding new stuff. So instead of doing that, I check an album once or twice, leave a rating, and come back and relisten to it years down the line. I've found the ratings usually hold, so it works. But when an album clicks or something, I bump it. No exceptions, no set-in-stone ratings, no mass rating deletions (for the foreseeable future). Which probably means some of my ratings aren't accurate anymore or I might’ve forgotten something I’ve listened to, but I've learned to accept that. I never really put an album away forever. I've saved digital copies of pretty much everything I've listened to, so I'll have some time to recheck everything when I retire or something. Right now, it's all about exploration. And the sad thing about true musical exploration is that you have to make some sort of sacrifice.
